Dewan Negara passes constitutional bill to lower voting age

The Dewan Negara passed the bill to amend the Federal Constitution to lower the voting age to 18 yesterday.

The constitutional amendment was passed with a majority with 47 votes, two more than the needed two-thirds support threshold of 45, 20 senators were absent from the sitting yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the government's next move was to table amendments to the Elections Offences Act 1954 (Act 5), the Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981 and the Election (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 at the Dewan Rakyat in October.
