The clownfish became extremely popular after Disney Pixar’s 2003 film “Finding Nemo”. There are at least thirty species of clownfish or anemonefish that are recognized. Clownfish are hermaphrodite, i.e. an animal or plant having both male and female reproductive tissue or organs. The clownfish can live from 6 to 10 years in natural habitats, however, in aquarium, their lifespan is much shorter. In a group of clownfish, there is a strict dominance hierarchy. And the group is dominated by the most aggressive female. It is preferable to introduce all the clownfish at the same time so the hierarchy is sorted out. What do they eat? Clownfish are omnivorous and can feed on undigested food from the host anemones. It also works the other way around, as the fecal matter from the clownfish provides nutrients to the sea anemone! There are 30 different type of clownfish and each one has a different need for space and water, so be careful for what you wish for!
