An Indonesian man bought fish directly from a local trawler hoping for a fresh meal but was shocked to see the creature's stomach filled with plastic.

The father bought the fish and took it home to clean in his kitchen in Jawa Barat, Indonesia on May 28.

However, he was astonished by the amount of junk discovered inside the fish when he went to remove the guts.

Shocking footage shows several plastic packets, a plastic spoon and a wire being pulled out from inside the fish.

"This is what we don't see in the market. This is what I found inside the fish when I bought from a fisherman," the man, who did not want to be named, is heard saying in the video.

He said he noticed something was off about the fish after slicing it open to removed the guts and felt something solid inside its organs.

The man found a plastic disposable spoon, some plastic snack wrappers, and a wire among other plastic trash.

He gave the video to a local NGO who criticized the amount of plastic pollution and called for more work tackling junk in the world's oceans.
