Shocking moment locals ride endangered leatherback turtle on Indonesian beach

A group of residents were caught riding a giant leatherback turtle on a beach in Indonesia.

Footage shows the locals taking turns to sit on top of a turtle in a horrifying scene on July 5.

The animal in distress can be seen struggling to move across the sand before being released in the ocean.

According to a witness, the turtle was captured by residents after laying eggs on Asukweri beach.

The outrageous incident came to light earlier this week and there has been no official statement from local authorities yet.

Leatherback turtles, the largest of all living turtles, are now facing extinction with their population declining precipitously particularly in the Pacific.
