Plan on Retiring, According to New Poll The AP-NORC Center recently surveyed
1,423 adults about their plans for retirement,
as well as their current financial health. The poll found a significant
disconnect between people’s
retirement plans and the reality
of aging in the workforce. 23 percent of workers reported that
they didn’t expect to stop working, and about one-quarter of Americans believed
they wouldn’t be retired by their 65th birthday. When asked about the trend of staying
in the workforce longer, those surveyed
gave very mixed assessments. 39 percent of Americans think staying in the
workforce positively affects their career, while
29 percent find it to be a negative thing. However, remaining in the workforce
may be unrealistic for many people that
deal with unexpected illnesses or injuries. Not only does a medical emergency prevent a
person from working, they also cause significant
financial damage because of pricey medical bills.
