Hong Kong protesters smash windows ahead of handover rally

Police in Hong Kong have clashed with protesters marking the anniversary of the city’s handover from the UK to Chinese rule.

Thousands of protesters gathered at the Legislative Council of Hong Kong since early morning. Close to a dozen of the protesters tried to break into the government building.



They pushed a cart loaded with cardboard through the shattered door of the legislative building, and tried to tear down the glass panel with metal poles.

Clashes also happened in other places, two rounds of pepper spray were unleashed to push the crowds back. 13 police officers were sent to hospital after the clashes.
