The functions of a NASCAR crew chief
If the driver is the actor on stage, the crew chief is the director behind the scenes. These are the pit crew's managers and the race's technical directors who usually have their installation in a box behind the pits. They are among the most knowledgeable member of any team, with the most technical expertise. Crew chiefs supervise and take charge of the work necessary on a car's engine, suspension and tuning. They would have also participated in the construction process and would need to have a thorough understanding of the particularities of any track. Additionally, they need to be good leaders and manage not just the pits, but also many of the psychological dynamics that shape the driver. A good crew chief's own psychological behaviour is an asset in of itself. The best in the business have the ability to absorb a barrage of criticism and are prepared to take daring or even audacious risks.
