Rates Are Soaring in the US The new report released
by the Commonwealth Fund
looked at 47 sets of data
from 2017 in all 50 states. It found that "deaths
of despair" have
increased nationally. Such deaths include suicide,
drug overdose and death
caused by alcohol consumption. The report also finds
striking regional differences
pertaining to deaths of despair. The mid-Atlantic states —
West Virginia, Ohio and
Pennsylvania — showed the
highest rates of drug overdose. From 2005 to 2017,
overdose death rates in
West Virginia rose by 450%. David Radley, scientist, NBC News Nebraska, Montana
the Dakotas, Wyoming
and Oregon had the highest
rates of alcohol deaths and suicide.
