Facebook Creates 'Study'
App to Track Users' Data The social media giant is paying participants
to share their data in a new attempt
to learn about people’s mobile app usage. Their new “Study” app will collect information such
as what apps are installed, how much time is being
spent on those apps and what devices are being used. Facebook confirmed that information such as user
IDs, passwords and messages will not be collected. The app is not downloadable to everyone, as
participants are being chosen by Facebook and
provided with an invitation link to the app. Facebook will run ads on its platform and elsewhere,
which will allow people to provide details about
themselves to determine their eligibility. No specifics have been provided
as to how chosen participants will
receive their compensation. Facebook previously shut down a similar application
in January 2019 called “Facebook Research,”
which had been paying users for data since 2016.
