November 13th, 2010. Billed as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” the legendary Manny Pacquiao takes on “El Tornado de Tijuana” Antonio Margarito for the WBC Super Welterweight Championship. This fight remains one of Pacquiao’s greatest performances as it is truly a case of David’s triumph over Goliath as Pacquiao, the naturally much smaller fighter dominated Margarito (a huge welterweight) over 12 rounds.

Going into the fight, Pacquiao is recognized as the No. 1 Pound for Pound fighter in the sport while Margarito a 3 time World Welterweight champion. Prior to this fight, Pacquiao had won world titles in 7 different weight divisions; Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight.

At fight night, Pacquiao weighs 148 pounds, while Margarito 165 pounds which means Pacquiao is outweighed severely by 17 pounds. Margarito also has significant height and reach advantages at 5’ 11” and 73” over the Pacman’s 5’ 5.5” and 67”. In spite of that, Margarito was dominated and brutalized by the speed, footwork, volume punching and power of the much smaller Pacquiao. However, Margarito displayed tremendous heart and courage by refusing to quit despite the grosteque injuries over both his eyes and face. Pacquiao delivered such a gruesome beating that in Round 11 he signaled referee Laurence Cole to stop the fight, but to no avail.

Margarito’s best moment was in Round 6 when he pins Pacquiao in the corner and land a barrage of punches with his best shot a left hook to the liver and momentarily hurts Pacquiao. However, Pacquiao fought out of the predicament and continues to further pummel Margarito and continues to win every round against an opponent who heavily outweighs him while giving away 5.5” in height and 6” in reach.

One notable factor going into this fight is Margarito’s 2009 controversy involving his attempt to use illegal handwraps prior to his fight against Shane Mosley; a fight which Margarito took ridiculous punishment in the last 2 rounds en route to an impending stoppage. Margarito’s boxing license was temporarily suspended as a result of the controversy. Thus, to some observers this is seen as a chance for Margarito to redeem himself.

Other interesting observations of this fight; Margarito landed 34 punches against Pacquiao in Round 7 which is the most number of punches ever landed on the Pacman in a single round up to that point. And in Round 10, Pacquiao landed an amazing 57 out of 89 power shots with an astounding accuracy of 63%.

Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of Pacquiao’s dazzling display of boxing skills - speed, footwork, power, combination punching and ring generalship!
