South Korea has urged Japan to not use its plan for tougher inspections of South Korean marine products as retaliation for Seoul's ban on certain Japanese seafood products.
Tokyo is strengthening the inspections starting tomorrow, citing risks of food poisoning during the summer.
Seoul's Vice Foreign Minister Cho Sei-young requested that the move should not be used as what he called a disguised discriminatory measure against South Korean seafood.
South Korea had banned certain Japanese marine products following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown.
