Unless they're noticeably sick or hurt, it can be difficult to know whether a child needs treatment.
Experts have lined up some childhood conditions that are hard to miss and can be left untreated.
Park Se-young has more.
This child's eyes are straight and clear, …because he had surgery to correct a squint last year.
Intermittent strabismus is often missed because the eye turn can be observed only occasionally, ...but leaving it without treatment can cause problems later on.
"The angle and frequency of the squint can increase and worsen cosmetic issues. Leaving a squint as it is can lead to further problems and make surgery more difficult."
When a child shows abnormal head positions or says the sunlight is too bright, …it could be a sign of squint.
Squint can be treated with surgery, …but glasses and regular examinations are needed as it comes with a 30 percent chance of recurrence.
Lazy eye, which cannot be corrected by glasses or contact lenses, …is also a common pediatric eye problem.
Since it does not usually cause symptoms, children between four and five years of age should be screened for it.
"Lazy eye diagnosed after ten years of age is difficult to cure."
Children should also be observed for teeth and jaw deformities, …like missing a permanent tooth, uneven teeth, protruding lips …and short and long chins.
These conditions make it difficult for children to chew and cut food …and can cause them to mouth breathe.
"There are many with class 2 malocclusion, when the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw or when the upper jaw protrudes."
Experts emphasize the importance of regular checkups when children are between four and five years of age …to spot hidden conditions and treat them early.
