Streich-Magnete, Walzer, Op. 141 - Josef Strauss

  • hace 5 años
"Magnetic Bow". The waltz Streich-Magnete, which Josef Strauss first played on 9th February 1863 at the engineer's ball in the Sofiensaal, was dedicated to the "students of engineering at the University of Vienna". The title of the waltz must have reminded music lovers of the magnet with which the roguish Despina brought her beaus Ferrando and Guglielmo, back to life in Mozart's opera Cosi fan Tutte. According to the teachings of the renowed doctor of Mozart's time magnetism was the focal point of a peculiar healing art. Whether magnets were still used in the 19th century in the practice of mesmerism is doubtful. Had they still been so used, Josef Strauss' Streich-Magnete waltz might have instead been dedicated to the medical students.
