Technology Is to Blame
for Making Americans Lazier A recent study at Washington University
has found that Americans spend almost a
third of their waking hours sitting down. The study, compromised of health surveys
from 51,000 Americans, found that
technology use was a huge contributing factor. Across a range of ages, the average
sitting time has increased by roughly
an hour a day from 2007 to 2016. They found that more than
50% of retired-aged adults
use their computers daily
for an hour or more, a drastic increase from the reported 15% in 2004. They also found that 62% of children between
the ages of 5 to 11 watch at least two hours of TV daily. Lead Researcher Yin
Can, via ‘AP News’ A sedentary lifestyle has been
shown to increase risks of obesity,
diabetes and heart disease. Adults are recommended to perform
at least 150 minutes of moderate activity
a week, but only 1 in 4 do so. Kids between the age of 6 and 17 should
perform 60 minutes of exercise daily, but
only 1 in 5 get the recommended amount.
