Brunei has imposed a hardline sharia penal code that includes death by stoning for adultery and gay sex. Despite a backlash from the outside world, the government defended the new punishments by saying the law “aims to educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals.” The sultanate is the first Southeast Asian country to introduce a sharia penal code at a national level.
