Woman cops flack on social media for eating meat pie with a fork at MCG

There are some things you just shouldn’t do at the footy.
You shouldn’t shout profanities within earshot of children. You shouldn’t waste your money on half-strength beers that cost $12 each.
And you definitely shouldn’t eat the meat out of the inside of a Four’n Twenty with a fork. But here we are, sadly.
Thanks to the power of social media and the good people at Brown Cardigan, we have footage of a woman in the stands at the MCG last night doing just that.
Yes, she’s doing what most footy fans do during a major break in play. But instead of biting into the pie — as it was designed to be eaten — she takes a fork and scoops out the meat and gravy. She blows on it to cool it down (smart move) before spooning it into her mouth.
Brown Cardigan shared the footage with the caption: “If this doesn’t rattle your cage, then you’re not Australian.”
It has been viewed more than 166,000 times and received more than 2500 comments by midday on Friday.
Surprisingly, the response was divided. Some celebrated her efforts and called her “smart and civilised”.
“I actually appreciate the way this pie was eaten,” one person wrote.
“I’m Australian and I do this,” another wrote, bravely outing herself.
But others were downright disgusted.
“What have I just witnessed, lock her in jail and throw away the key,” one furious commenter said.
“This has disturbed me,” another wrote.
One person called it a “national disgrace”.
Richmond went on to lose the match by a large margin, but none of that really matters anymore.
Of course, the humble meat pie has been at the centre of controversy before.
Queensland Police had to intervene when footage went viral of an ESPN reporter in the US dismantling a pie on camera.
Darren Lovell was trying to educate the people of Philly about the iconic Australian cuisine after the local 76ers — which include Aussie Ben Simmons on their roster — hosted a pie night last year.
But what he did was hard to watch.
Later, Lovell apologised. “I am sorry to all Australians about my lack of understanding of how to eat a meat pie,” he wrote.
Queensland Police shared the footage on Twitter with a warning.
