"We have a whole history of craftsmen who have passed on the values of the saddler's trade, both in the way they work with their tools to make the saddle and in the way they develop it so that it is technically good," says Hermès' master saddler Laurent Goblet. The French brand is a big player in the world of luxury goods, but Hermès shop front in the Rue Faubourg St Honoré in Paris conceals an intriguing piece of history: the original workshop which, since 1880, has produced its famous bespoke saddles.
