riyanka Gandhi Vadra, who formally joined the Congress with much fanfare in January, will not be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, say party sources.

In her first election rally in UP after taking up a formal party post, Priyanka Gandhi joined Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia for a roadshow in Lucknow, but did not utter a single word in the daylong journey.

Sources say, Priyanka Gandhi will not speak at any of the future rallies too and let brother Rahul Gandhi do all the talking.

Priyanka Gandhi, as she has been doing so far, will work behind the curtains and focus more on strengthening Congress's organizational structure in Uttar Pradesh.

At an election event in Amethi, Rahul Gandhi had recently said that Congress will form the government in Uttar Pradesh and that will be the focus of the party in the BJP-ruled Hindi heartland.

According to sources, Priyanka Gandhi will continue to work on this aim of her brother and start campaigning in the state.

In January, Congress general secretary in-charge of eastern UP, Priyanka Gandhi took to active politics when her brother, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, handed her the responsibility of the politically vital Uttar Pradesh.

Sources say Priyanka Gandhi will not contest the Lok Sabha elections because Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are already contesting two seats, the Gandhi bastions of Amethi and Rae Bareli.

This comes even as reports came in of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also not being keen on contesting the general elections.

As the Congress released its first list of 15 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, speculation was rife over Priyanka being fielded as a candidate as the list prominently featured the names of the two other Gandhis, but not Priyanka.
