Nation At 9: Supreme Court vetoes a united parliament
  • 5 years ago
The Supreme Court on Friday struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC), saying it has no constitutional validity and restored

the collegium system of appointing judges in the higher judiciary.

A constitution bench headed by Justice JS Khehar ruled by a majority of four to one that the NJAC was against the independence of the judiciary and

the basic structure of the Constitution.

The government which was pushing for a complete overhaul in the appointments system in the judiciary is left surprised with this verdict.
