The central government has sought to distance itself from controversy regarding the compulsory recitation of Sanskrit and Hindi hymns in the morning assembly of the Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Even though the Minister of Human Resource Development is the Chairman of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), the ministry's affidavit in the Supreme Court has said that it has nothing to do with the contentious issue.

केंद्रीय विद्यालयों में बच्चों द्वारा सुबह की सभा में गाई जाने वाली प्रार्थना के खिलाफ दायर याचिका पर अब संविधानपीठ सुनवाई करेगी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट की दो सदस्यीय बेंच ने मामले को संविधान पीठ को भेजा है। याचिका में कहा गया है कि केंद्रीय विद्यालयों में हिंदी-संस्कृत में होने वाली प्रार्थना असंवैधानिक है। केन्द्र सरकार की तरफ से एएसजी तुषार मेहता ने कहा कि "तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय" जैसे संस्कृत मंत्रों का पाठ करना सांप्रदायिक और गैर धर्मनिरपेक्ष नहीं है।
