The NDA government is all set to announce its decision to confer country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and freedom fighter and Benaras Hindu University founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on Wednesday, sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to send a recommendation in this regard on Wednesday afternoon to President Pranab Mukherjee.
The announcement about conferring the honour on Vajpayee will reportedly be made on the eve of the veteran BJP leader's 90th birthday falling on December 25.
Vajpayee, who led the first NDA government as the 11th Prime Minister of India, first for 13 days in 1996 and then from 1998 to 2004, will be the first political leader from the country to receive the honour.
