Meerut gangraped victim makes a complete U-turn

The Meerut gang rape and forced conversion case took a complete U-turn on Sunday after the 22-year-old victim ran away from her house and approached the police alleging threat to her life from her family.

In a statement to the police, she denied gang rape or forcible conversion, and declared that she had gone with Kaleem, the man she had earlier accused as the main perpetrator, of her own free will. Kaleem and eight others were arrested after her accusation on August 3 that she was abducted, gang-raped and converted to Islam by Muslims of her village, an episode that put western Uttar Pradesh on the boil.

The BJP, the Sangh Parivar and affiliated groups took up the case as a textbook example of “love jihad”, alleging an Islamist conspiracy to lure and convert Hindu women.

“I went with the boy of a different community out of my own will,” she said in her written statement submitted to a women’s police station in Meerut.
