Gurgaon college girl sets herself ablaze over poor marks in exam

Angry over the principal's refusal to let students go to the Maharshi Dayanand University to recheck their answer sheets, a 19-year-old student allegedly set herself on fire on Monday morning on the premises of a government girls' college at Sector 14 of Gurgaon.

The victim, identified as Pinki Chauhan, a second year Mathematics Honours, sustained 85 per cent burn injuries. She has been admitted in a critical condition at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

The college campus has been on the boil since Saturday after the university published results of the first and second year exams. Many students had ended up with zero marks in more than twothree subjects.

Pinki, who was leading the agitation, got miffed after the college authorities reportedly pressurised her to let go of the issue. According to the victim's brother, the college administration had locked up a bunch of students inside the Chemistry laboratory on Monday morning and asked them to cancel their trip to Rohtak. The students then called Pinki, as she was leading the agitation and later got into a heated discussion with the faculty.
