The smaller parties in the saffron alliance shot into prominence on Wednesday as the Shiv Sena-BJP failed to hammer out an amicable formula among for sharing of seats. BJP rejects Shiv-Sena’s offer of 123 seats

Both the Sena and the BJP were keen on outwitting each other to win over the junior partners. As a result, Raju Shetti of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS), Mahadeo Jankar of the Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) and RPI's Ramdas Athavale divided time between the Sena and the BJP all through the day, cracking formulae and carrying messages from Matoshree, the Bandra residence of Uddhav Thackeray, to a five-star hotel at the BKC where the state BJP leaders were holed up for talks.

The Sena made it clear that it will not budge from its demand of 151 seats. The state BJP, on the other hand, isn't willing to take anything less than 130 seats in a 288-strong Vidhan Sabha, sources said. The Sena will launch its poll campaign in Mumbai on Saturday, minus the BJP.
