Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor shifts the blame on students
  • 5 years ago
The midnight police crackdown on Jadavpur University students has triggered outrage across the country and given fresh momentum to the agitation, with the students' voices resonating in the corridors of power and elite campuses in other cities. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi called home secretary Basudeb Banerjee to Raj Bhavan to find out what went wrong on the campus on the wee hours of Wednesday even as protest marches were held at JNU in New Delhi and IIT-Powai (Mumbai).

Vice-chancellor Abhijeet Chakrabarty found himself increasingly isolated on Thursday as the police and government held him accountable for calling the cops to the campus at night. The VC submitted a report to the governor just before police commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha held a press meet to say that the cops went in with "extreme restraint" to rescue the VC after getting "repeated distress calls" from him. JU pro-VC Siddhartha Datta, however, was upset with the police action and said that the decision to call police was the VC's own. "It was not discussed in the executive council meeting," Datta said, adding: "All I can say about the incident is that it is unfortunate and I am deeply hurt." The pro-VC, a veteran of 50 gheraos in his 32 years at JU, believes that the only solution to such problems is discussion.
