In a relief to Kerala's bar owners, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the state government not to cancel their licences till September 30, TV reports say.

The court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the liquor ban order in the state.

The Supreme Court asked the Kerala High Court to hear the petition challenging the prohibition expeditiously.

On Wednesday, the apex Court told the Kerala government not to enforce its order prohibiting functioning of non-five-star hotel bars till Thursday.

The apex court bench headed by Justice Anil R. Dave asked the state government to keep its hands off as it would hear the matter Thursday when it was mentioned by a battery of senior lawyers representing different petitioners.

The Kerala government had passed an order banning the sale of liquor at bars and hotels below the five-star category and the ban order comes into force Sep 11.
