SC orders release of undertrials who have served half their sentence

Ushering in a major reform, the Supreme Court on Friday ordered for immediate release of all the undertrial prisoners, who have served half of the maximum jail term provided under the offences they have been charged with.
A bench led by Chief Justice R M Lodha asked the trial judges to start visiting the jails under their jurisdiction from October 1 for a period of two months and release all such prisoners.
The court said that the judicial officers shall pass orders of release immediately in jails itself.
Such an order, the court said, would be in compliance with the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court order is likely to benefit thousands of undertrial prisoners.
