Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that as Uttar Pradesh chief minister, he gave a free hand to security forces to tackle Maoists, drawing the ire of the human rights groups.
"As UP CM, in tackling Maoist threat, I had assured police forces freedom from hassle by Human Rights Commission," the home minister said in a function.
"When I was UP CM, I had given a free hand to police forces to tackle Maoists," he added.
His comment purportedly backing extra-judicial killings have created an uproar.
"All the challenges threatening law and order should be tackled within the limits of the law," said Congress leader Manish Tewari.
