Supreme Court to hear PIL on Judicial Appointment Bill
  • 5 years ago
The Supreme Court will hear petitions challenging the National Judicial Appointment Commission (NJAC) Bill on August 25.

The apex court will hear four pleas seeking quashing of the bill, which was passed by Parliament recently. The PILs contest that the bill violates the basic structure of the constitution, threatening the judicial independence. They also allege that with the bill, the separation of powers between judiciary and executive are being compromised.

The bill paves way for the judicial appointment panel in place of existing collegium system for the appointment of judges to the apex court and the high courts.
