Mumbai: Sailors rescued, oil on board sparks scare

In a 30-minute rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard airlifted 11 crew members who were stranded on Indian merchant vessel MV Priyanka, which started drifting after it broke its anchorage 20 nautical miles or 37km from Colaba shore around 11.20am on Monday.

Due to inclement weather, the ship tilted, and it could have sunk 3km from Revdanda Dock near Alibaug had the coast guard not swung into action immediately. The vessel, which has been re-anchored, is now being monitored.

Manned by 16 Indian crew members, the vessel was carrying 1,900 million tonnes of iron pellets. She was on passage from Mumbai port to Revdanda Dock and was anchored near the dock on Sunday.
