Congress-NCP strain at seams ahead of Maharashtra polls

With an eye on assembly elections after severe drubbing in Lok Sabha polls, the Congress-NCP government approved 16 per cent reservation for Marathas and five per cent for Muslims in government jobs and education institutions.

In the wake of NCP president Sharad Pawar's ultimatum to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, a populist proposal got the legislative stamp to provide 16% reservation for backward Marathas and 5 per cent for Muslims in education and government jobs.
