Protests in Allahabad over rail fare hike

The Narendra Modi government is facing criticism over the steep hike in rail fares. Political parties are up in arms against the fare hike and are demanding a rollback of the decision.

In Allahabad, Samajwadi Party workers stopped a train in protest of the 14.2 per cent hike in rail fares. The SP workers got on to the tracks, raising flags and slogans and halted a train. Police personnel had to rush to the spot to break off the protests.

CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat questioned Modi's 'achhe din' promise, saying, "We highly condemn this. This is unpresidential. It's such a crime against all the labourers who travel by train. Doing this a couple of days before the budget is wrong. We have urged the people to protest against this."
