The Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Herat has been attacked by gunmen, and the area is surrounded by security forces.

The assault, which began at 3.25 am, has reportedly been on for several hours.

Officials at the Indian consul say it is not clear how many people entered. Some of the attackers are believed to be hiding in buildings nearby and firing at the consulate.

The Indian foreign ministry has said all staff is safe and the Afghan army has come in.

Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin has tweeted, "Brave ITBP personnel and Afghan soldiers rebut attackers. All safe. Operation underway."

The attack comes on a day Islamabad is expected to inform India whether Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will come for Narendra Modi's swearing in as Prime Minister on Monday.

Afghan president Hamid Karzai has confirmed that he will attend the oath ceremony.
