A battle of legacies is shaping up in Sultanpur, where the youngest scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family and the local erstwhile royal family are pitted against each other. BJP's likely candidate Varun Gandhi is taking on the wife of Sanjay Singh, who had threatened to rebel against his Congress party but was nominated by the party to the Rajya Sabha.
Sultanpur constituency is considered a stronghold of Congress' first family and neighbours Amethi, which is represented by party vice president Rahul Gandhi while his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi is the MP from the adjoining Rae Bareli.
But the entry of Varun Gandhi threatens to upset the Congress applecart, especially since the BJP is on an upswing in Uttar Pradesh.
