In Uttar Pradesh, the polling percentage till 3pm was 46.77 with no reports of any untoward incident from the 12 constituencies.

Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, however, lagged behind in the polling race with just 35% votes cast till 3pm in the six constituencies. The voting percentage in all the 19 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra that went to poll on Thursday reached 27.52% in the first six hours.

In Tamil Nadu, about 60% of the voters across 39 Lok Sabha seats and the lone seat in the union territory (UT) of Puducherry had exercised their franchise till 1pm.

Bihar recorded 46.55% turnout till 3pm.

Maoist-affected Chhattisgarh too witnessed high voter turnout in seven constituencies in the state with 41% polling recorded till 1pm

In this round of polling, the stakes are very high for the Congress but more for the BJP which is tipped to form the next government under the leadership of its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

The Congress had won 36 of 117 seats in 2009, the BJP 26, the DMK 18, the AIADMK 9 and the Samajwadi Party 5.
