The government has appointed Admiral R.K. Dhowan as the new chief of the Naval Staff, two months after D.K. Joshi quit in February following a fire onboard submarine INS Sindhuratna that left two officers dead.

The defence ministry said Dhowan would take over as the new chief with immediate effect. He had already been made the acting Navy chief when Joshi quit after accepting moral responsibility for the incident.
