No need to rename Amma Canteens says Election Commission

The Election Commission of India on Thursday said, with reference to the PIL by DMK's M K Stalin, that 'Amma' is generic term and can be used anywhere. It is not objectionable if it appears in government schemes or public properties (with exceptions). Clarifying its stance from the Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar, the EC made its stance clear to the opposition party. The EC also said that it would be unfair to question the renovated entrance of the MGR memorial as it was constructed in 2012, before the model code of conduct came into effect. This clarification was made by the CEO of the memorial as there is a model of two leaves (AIADMK's party symbol) at the gate. Earlier in Uttar Pradesh, the EC had asked the UP government to cover the statue of elephants erected by the Mayawati party during the elections.
