The Centre on Monday moved the Supreme Court asking for a stay on the Tamil Nadu government's decision to set free four convicts serving life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, however, said the state government will counter the Centre's plea in the apex court.

The Centre's move came after the court had said it could file a fresh petition regarding the four prisoners whose sentence has been remitted by the Tamil Nadu government. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam agreed to hear the Centre's plea on February 27.

"The Centre has already written to us. We will counter it in the court," she told reporters when she visited the party headquarters on the occasion of her 66th birthday. The UPA government has been vocal against the Tamil Nadu government's move to release the convicts Nalini Sriharan, Robert Pyas, Jayakumar and Ravichandran. Jayalalithaa, who stole a march over her rivals such as the DMK on this issue, said: "We will do whatever is necessary legally."
