Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam called his mother for advice from a police station where he was taken after he was beaten by shopkeepers at a south Delhi market. Hours later, he was found dead in his bed.

"My boy called me, 'Mummy I am in police station. I have done this, they are asking money. Rs. 10,000. I told my boy what was the reason. Ok, you have money? Yes, mummy I have 12,000... If I pay this 10,000, tomorrow I can't go to college. I told him - don't worry, your sister is there, take from there and I will send you back...He paid Rs. 10,000," Marina Nido shared at a memorial in Itanagar. She added that she spoke to an officer who said "the problem is solved. Your son is great. He will be a big man."

Nido, the son of an Arunachal Pradesh legislator, was allegedly beaten on Wednesday by men at a confectionery shop where he and his friends had stopped for directions. The men allegedly attacked him with sticks and rods after he reacted angrily to their jibes about his appearance, and broke a glass counter.

The police say they negotiated a settlement, which included damages for the broken glass. Nido then went to his sister's home, where he was found dead the next day. His family alleges that he died of his injuries, but doctors say that has not been established by the autopsy. The report found that Nido had died of a swelling in his brain and excess fluid in his lungs.
