Is Sharad Pawar betraying Congress ? BJP-NCP alliance on the cards ? - NewsX

A sign of the BJP's electoral prospects could be detected in the unsolicited support offered to the principal Opposition's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, by a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a constituent of the UPA.

In an obvious reference to Modi, senior NCP leader and Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Praful Patel said: "If judiciary has given certain finality to controversy, I think we should lay it to rest."

He was referring to a local court in Gujarat upholding a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report last month, giving a clean chit to Modi in the Gulbarg Society massacre case, part of the post-Godhra riots that ravaged the State in 2002.

Patel's endorsement was particularly significant in the light of the fact that the appellate courts are yet to take a call on the SIT report.

The statement has come in the wake of a number of poll surveys predicting a victory for the BJP in the coming general elections. The NCP has nine members in the Lok Sabha and six in the Rajya Sabha. After the DMK pulled out from the Government, it became the biggest ally in the UPA.
