The Cabinet has given its nod to set up an inquiry commission to probe into the snooping scandal in Gujarat.

The panel will probe the alleged surveillance of a young woman architect by the Gujarat government. The inquiry has been approved under Section 3 of the Commission of Inquiry Act of 1952.

Reacting to the move, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley tweeted, "It is legally suspect and will be challenged in court."

"Cabinet decision to appoint a Commission to probe the alleged snooping is violative of the federal structure," he added.

Earlier, the home ministry had prepared a note to be placed before the Union Cabinet for its approval for conducting the probe either through a sitting or a retired Supreme Court judge.
