A UP court on Friday dealt a big blow to the Akhilesh Yadav government by rejecting its plea to drop terror charges against a suspect, accused of plotting a string of blasts in 2007 in which districts courts in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad were targeted.

A Barabanki court rejected the SP government's decision to drop charges against Azamgarh resident Tariq Qasmi as special judge Kalpana Misra questioned the state government's intention, saying there is "no reason to interfere in court's proceedings" and that it would not be in the interest of society and laws of justice. "Today they want to drop charges, tomorrow they will offer them Padma Bhushan," the judge said.
