Rajya Sabha or Council of States is a permanent house with 245 members. In the proportional representation with the single transferable vote (STV) system, the members of a state's legislative assembly and Union territories who are known as MLA's are allowed to vote in the Rajya Sabha elections. Each voter is required to rank his preferences and if the first choice candidate has enough votes already or no chance of being elected, the vote is transferred to the second order of preference and so on.

The counting of votes will be held up at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
