Why does India tolerate rapists?
Speak Out India is a NewsX special show which debates the main news event of the day. It's a repeat of the attack on Damini in December last year. In Delhi again, a little five year-old was kidnapped and brutally raped till the point of death for three days. And the police tried to hush up the case. Here's what has happened. On a day when little girls are worshiped as living goddesses, a 5-year-old girl Masoom was held captive tied to a bed, raped, battered, her body mutilated and left to die. This trauma went on for full 48 hours before she was rescued in an unconscious state. Masoom is currently battling for her life. She was raped by a monster who happened to be her neighbour and whom Masoom called uncle. The doctors found foreign objects including a candle and a hair oil bottle inside Masoom's body. But this is not all, police apathy adding insult to injury, instead of taking their complaint and looking for the monster accused police tried to bribe the parents and asked them to stay away from public. However, despite the introduction of tougher anti-rape laws and pledges of better policing, little has changed for a city titled "the rape capital" of India. So, the question we are asking is -- Will India's rape shame ever come to an end? Is death penalty enough for monster rapists? Why does India tolerate rapists? Is chemical castration an answer? Is law enough to end India's rape shame? We debate this on the show and try to evolve consensus among our panelists over the issue.
