Rape laws: Justice Verma report suggests time-bound trial

The Justice JS Verma committee, set up to propose amendments to laws relating to crime against women, today submitted its report to the home ministry. Sexual vilence and gender bias is the key focus of the report. The commission tasked with looking at sex crime laws after the gang-rape of a student on a New Delhi bus was expected to recommend tougher sentences its report which was submitted to the government on Wednesday. Judge Verma received thousands of suggestions after he set January 5 as a deadline for comments from jurists, women's groups and other forums to revamp existing legislation to deal with sex offenders.
