Shiv Sena, BJP need to tread with caution
  • 5 years ago
Shiv Sena’s statement, “too much demand for sex can lead to divorce”, is a veiled warning to the BJP and to the smaller parties of the grand alliance in Maharashtra that they must stay in their limits and should not dare to challenge Sena’s claims of being the senior partner and, therefore, its prerogatives to decide who should contest on how many seats. In what is called decisive victory, the Grand Alliance Mahayuti won 42 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 Lok Sabha election. The success in the Lok Sabha election has made the parties in the Mahayuti demand Assembly seats proportionate to their victory in the Lok Sabha.
But the Sena’s assertion was surprising. Not only it sounded sexist and hence objectionable, it also showed Sena’s disregard for an ideological coalition partner that has stood the test of time for 25 years. The existing formula for seat-sharing has been to acknowledge the senior status of the BJP in Lok Sabha election (contesting 26 of the 48) and to give the same status to the Shiv Sena in the Assembly election (Sena contests 171).
The manner in which the Sena and Uddhav Thackeray is trying to push things is not healthy for the coalition.
While this is natural for Shiv Sena to try and keep the cap on the BJP’s aspirations, this is equally natural for the BJP to aspire for more since Modi’s image is going to be a big factor in the Assembly election as well. The BJP would like to have a Chief Minister of its own, so that it can implement its agenda of good governance, transparency and accountability.

The moot issue is can the BJP depend on the Shiv Sena to deliver these and walk out if the same is not delivered. The other side is that can the BJP afford to leave the alliance and try its electoral luck without the Sena, if the Sena does not agree on the agenda of good governance and fight against corruption? Can Sena and the BJP agree on a common declared agenda of good governance? Mere anti-Congress alliance would not cut much ice.

The Shiv Sena has already given out its strategy by talking of its party president Uddhav Thackeray as the Chief Minister. This does not happen in a coalition that one partner declares its Chief Ministerial candidate without consulting the other, more so when there is no clear about the formula for the top post. The manner in which the Sena and even Uddhav Thackeray is trying to push things is not healthy for the coalition.
