Supreme Court gives CBI chief a week to respond to charges, takes custody of visitor diary

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation chief Ranjit Sinha to respond to the allegations that he met the accused in the 2G spectrum allocation and coal scams at his official residence in New Delhi.

When Sinha's lawyer argued that the investigation into the coal scam will be delayed because of the controversy, the Supreme Court said, "Heavens won't fall. The case has gone on for years, one more week does not matter. Serious allegations have been made."

"Averments made against the CBI director are serious and he cannot say he won't file an affidavit," the apex court said, giving Sinha a week to respond to the charges.

"Whatever you want to tell us, say it in black and white," the apex court told Sinha.

The Supreme Court also took into custody the visitor diary at Sinha's residence, submitted by senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who said he got it through anonymous sources.

What are the allegations against CBI chief Ranjit Sinha?

There are allegations that two top Reliance ADAG officials visited the CBI director's residence nearly 50 times in the last one year. It is also being charged that the visits coincided with Sinha's alleged attempt to file an affidavit which sought to water down the charges against the company in the 2G scam.

The visitor diary, a copy of which was accessed by Headlines Today, also shows that Devendra Darda was one of the frequent visitors to 2, Janpath, the CBI chief's official residence in Lutyen's Delhi.
