Heavy woollens are out as rain, snow and fog heralds the onset of chilly days across north India. With Leh town in Jammu and Kashmir recording the lowest temperature at a bone-freezing minus 12.4 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar reeled under minus 1.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The higher reaches of Shimla and adjoining areas received the season's first snowfall on Tuesday and most hill stations in Himachal and UP witnessing spells of chilling winds and snow. The mercury also slipped in New Delhi as the city witnessed steady drizzle with chilly winds. The maximum temperature dipped four notches below the season's average, settling at 18.7 degrees Celsius. The Met Dept officials have said, winter has set in early this year compared to last two years with even the plains in North extending from Rajasthan to Bihar in grip of fog and occasional rain.
