Former Union minister Jaswant Singh is in "very critical" condition after suffering a head injury at his home on Friday, the government said.

A defence ministry statement said: "At present the condition is very critical. He is on life support systems and under constant monitoring by a team of neurosurgeons and critical care providers."

"He (Singh) has sustained a head injury and has been admitted to the ICU (intensive care unit)," said a doctor at the Army Research and Referral Hospital where the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was admitted early on Friday.

"Right now he is under the observation of neurosurgeons and critical care specialists," added the doctor who did not wish to be named.

A staff member at Singh's residence here declined comment on the seriousness of his head injury. He said all family members were at the hospital.
