Nirbhya rape case: Supreme Court stays execution of two convicts

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the execution of two people convicted and sentenced to death in the December 2012 or Nirbhaya gang rape case.

Four people - Mukesh, Vinay, Pawan and Akshay - were sent to the gallows last year by a Delhi court. The same was upheld by the Delhi High Court.
But the apex court put on hold the execution of Akshay and Vinay. The same court had stayed the execution of the two others.

The four have been guilty of raping and fatally hurting a paramedical student on December 16, 2012. The incident triggered nation-wide protests and unprecedented media coverage.

The main accused in the crime, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail and the sixth accused, a juvenile, was sentenced to three years in a juvenile home.
